After Nathan left Sheaffer pen, he moved to Chicago where he lived in the Marina Towers.  By this time he was established as one of the most eligible bachelors.  He met the love of his life, June Ruth Goldberg, shortened his name to Zepell, got his U.S. Citizenship, and at the age of 50, got married on June 22, 1965, which was also June’s birthday.  Every month after that Nathan and June celebrated their “monthaversary.”

Now that Nathan was successful, he started looking for a nicer place to live.  He joked that Japan would be a nice place, since at 5’4” he wouldn’t have to look up at people.  Ultimately, he chose Santa Barbara for its beauty and pleasant yearly temperature. So nine months after getting married, he and June moved to Santa Barbara, California, where he continued his private pen inventing career.  His final invention was the “Pentastic” pen, which was a flat plastic ballpoint that writes in two colors.  Since man first scribbled with quills, the shape of writing instruments has always been round; however, the Pentastic is so flat it can be used as a book mark.

From the day Nathan was born, he survived innumerable life and death moments.  However, his final struggle was from within his own body ~ as he died of cancer on February 28, 1982.  Nathan faced death as he lived, with strength, courage and his infectious joy for life.
